SWF Desperately Seeking Successful……. SEO???

Six months ago I didn’t have a clue what SEO was nor did I know I wanted a healthy, successful relationship with it.  To be honest, I’m still getting to know SEO.  We’ve reached the comfortable conversation stage but I wouldn’t say we’re in a relationship yet. With that said, let me introduce you to SEO so as you browse the web you can understand things a little better.

What is SEO?

SEO – Search Engine Optimization.  The process of affecting the visibility of a website or web page in a search engine’s natural or unpaid search results.

Where does one look for SEO?   On a SERP.

SERP – Search Engine Results Page.   Example below using the search “running shoes”

SERP example

A) Keywords – A word or group of words used by a searcher on a search engine.

B) Paid Search –  Placing ads for products or services on search engines.  Listings appear at the top and on the right hand side of the page.  These ads are typically small blurbs for a store, service or merchandise.

C) Organic Search –  These are the listings found on the left side or main view in search engine results and are not results of direct financial payments.   The order placement in the search results are based on keyword relevancy within a web page.  Organic Search is also known as Natural Search.

D) Fold – The bottom of the screen on a web page or search result page, before scrolling.  It’s best to have your most important content above the fold on a web page.

How do you know if you have a successful relationship with SEO? Your company shows up in search results above the fold on the first page of the SERP.  And you avoid Black Hat procedures. BlackHatVsWhiteHat

White Hat – used to describe ethical SEO tactics

Black Hat – used to describe unethical SEO tactics; which could include hidden text, keyword stuffing, repetition of content and/or shady link building.   If black hat tactics are used, your site can be blacklisted from the search engine.

I hope this quick introduction to SEO has helped you get to know the basics behind your internet searches.  SEO As far as my budding relationship with SEO, over the next semester we will be working “hands on” on our relationship in my Digital Marketing Lab class.  I look forward to the day when we are comfortable together, just like an old favorite hat…preferably a white hat.  LOL  – just a little SEO humor.
